Thank you, friends, for your kind words of encouragement and support. I wrote this for FEW as a farewell piece but it’s also a cathartic personal story. Thanks again!

As our jobs can often be our identity, it is hard. I remember being disappointed I wasn’t in the career I wanted to be in Tokyo and cringing every time I had to say I was teaching English. I did find other ways to feel fulfilled, like volunteering, as you did. But it’s brave to share that it was tough. People need to hear that.
I think using retirement is perfect!

I happened to be bored expat housewife in US and Thailand etc. Now back in Tokyo, I am doing what I love to do like volunteering and start businesses (close to non profit startups) I don’t really need to work but thanks to my husband’s financial support, I can do what I can do and no regrets. Thanks for sharing your wonderful story!

Life is simpler when you tell everyone you are retired. Looking forward to hearing about your New York adventures and hope to see you again one day.

Looking forward to the next iteration from New York. You’ve done so much in your professional life, there’s nothing wrong with saying you’re now “retired”. It’s an enviable title that most of us are longing to have. Good luck during your transition to NYC and keep up the writing and knitting (both of which are equally fabulous!)

Ella
