JMEC – Japan Market Entry Competition Scholarships
  • Ever wanted to know how to write a professional business plan?
  • Are you looking to develop practical business skills and hands-on experience?
  • Do you want to work with a diverse group of multinational professionals and gain insights into the Japanese Market and international business practices?

Here is your chance to score a ¥150,000 professional business program FOR FREE and catapult your career to the next level.

Interested? Read on….

The upcoming JMEC, Japan Market Expansion Competition program starts in November, but FEW will be collecting applications for two (YES TWO) eligible FEW members to participate on full scholarship. JMEC has been a corporate member and supporter of FEW Japan for many years.

What is JMEC?

JMEC is a Tokyo-based business training program since 1993 and supported by 18 foreign chambers of commerce in Japan. It is the Japan Market Expansion Competition.

How does it work:

The program has two parts.

Part 1 allows you to participate in a lecture and workshop series with experienced executives, business owners and entrepreneurs as instructors. Think of it like a mini-MBA.

Part 2 teaches you how to research and write a complete professional business plan for a real business client. Students who complete both parts will be awarded an official Pearson Assured JMEC program certificate.

JMEC alumni have been promoted and have advanced their careers due to their JMEC experience and skills.

Interested members in good standing, and who have been a FEW member for at least 1 year, may apply for the FEW Japan scholarship. The chosen FEW Japan scholarship recipient must agree to share about their experience in JMEC to the FEW Japan membership through an article (FEW website) and/or sharing at a FEW event during the year. Applications are now CLOSED.

Want more info?

Attend one of the JMEC Alumni Events or information sessions to speak with Alumni and learn more about the program. Two years ago, the FEW Japan scholarship recipient, Christine Hernlund and her team placed in the winning category for the 2021-2022 year. Another participating FEW Japan member, Chinyere Okoli and her team received an honorable mention.

This is a unique opportunity to learn from some of the best lecturers and then put this into practice by creating a business plan for a real client while working with a team environment. Yes it will be a commitment but who knows where this will lead you.

Program Report by Ai Takada.

If you want to advance in your career, I highly recommend that you participate in the JMEC program.

The Japan Market Expansion Competition (JMEC) is a 6-month intensive business training program that teaches you how to write a business plan to a client. JMEC is also known as a mini-MBA program, with programs ranging from business strategy to marketing and finance, all of which are designed to help you improve your skills and abilities in the business world.

This program is much more difficult than you might think, but it is definitely worth taking.

Every year, FEW offers a full scholarship to those who wish to participate in JMEC, and thankfully I was able to participate in the program in 2020.

There are two main reasons why I participated in this program. The first reason is that I wanted to broaden my business knowledge and perspective. When you work in the same industry for a long time, you gain sufficient experience in a certain area, but your way of thinking inevitably becomes biased, so when you are faced with a slightly difficult problem, it can sometimes be difficult to find a solution.

To solve this issue, I wanted to gain knowledge and experience that I did not have at the time and progress in the business field through participation in the program.

The second reason is that I wanted to expand my business network. I rarely have the opportunity to meet and exchange opinions with people from different industries and backgrounds, so I found it stimulating and appealing to receive training with people of different nationalities, backgrounds, and jobs.

The JMEC program begins in November and ends with a final presentation in early June, with lectures and discussions from November to January and work with project members beginning after the project groupings are announced in January.

Each group receives an SOW from a different client, and each team decides everything on its own, from how to communicate with the people involved to how to manage the project, until the business plan is submitted in May.

My team consisted of six people from very different industries: a research company, an advertising agency, freelance consulting, a business club, a restaurant-related company, and a consulting company, all of whom varied in nationality and age.

Unfortunately, due to the effects of Covid-19, there were restrictions in face-to-face communication. Normally, JMEC lectures and discussions are held face-to-face, but the 2020 lectures were half face-to-face and half online.

Most of our meetings were also held online, but I feel that by working together on the project for several months, two to three times a week for a few hours at a time, the team became so united that online communication was not a problem.

I was thrilled about accomplishing my two aforementioned goals, but what I found even more valuable was the opportunity to enhance my communication skills with team members and the clients. It was a very good experience to learn how to move things forward while coming to terms with each other’s different ideas and learning from mistakes.

I was blessed with wonderful team members and mentors, and I am very grateful to all of them for their support.

In fact, there were many times when I thought that I would not be able to continue the program because I was too busy with work and training at the same time, but I am very glad that I did not give up.

Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to FEW and to JMEC for giving me such a valuable opportunity.

Sarah Furuya Coaching

“In June I’ve been taking a complete break from Social Media and I have to tell you it feels great. And also a bit strange. A touch lonely perhaps? I’m not sure really since it has been just over a week at time of writing. As I planned this little digital vacay, I wondered what one might do in the spaces that aren’t spent scrolling Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn, all of which my right-hand woman, Laura, has been given strict instruction to withhold the password to. STRICT. Until July 1st.

Each day I muse on what I have been doing – so we rather grandly call it the ‘I Wonder Project’. You can follow along with Sarah Furuya Coaching on the above-mentioned channels – it’s a lot of fun. I can report that the scrolling continues – scroll the Guardian, YouTube and email frequently BUT with a lot more awareness. I’ve finished and read books and articles, gone to bed earlier, slept better, gone to the seaside, am experiencing earthquakes, leadership elections and other incidents at my own pace rather than a slew of opinions and there is far less drama. I’m texting friends, delegating differently and clearing my head. Having more conversations with my husband and have watched a number of entire films, perhaps related to having a longer attention span. I’m also listening to a lot of New Age style music to help with focus. Go ahead judge. I’ll meet you on the hill with a joss sticks at solstice. Enjoying quiet and empty time. Cooking more. Going out more. Sitting on trains without scrolling more. Looking out the window. Spraying things gold as a direct result of watching interior shows. Watering the plants more frequently.

I will be recording my observations following completion July 1st so be sure to hop on Sarah Furuya Coaching newsletter to receive updates and also to sign up for a 30-minute Discovery Call – a 30-minute coaching call to try out coaching and untangle any immediate issues you may have front and centre.”

April Offers from our Sponsors

eCornell – 30% discount on MBA-level Change Leadership Certificate

Kotter, a contributor to Forbes, in writing about Change Management vs. Change Leadership states that some people use the terms interchangeably and stresses the significant differences between them.

  • Change management is articulated to be a set of tools used to keep change efforts under control.
  • Change leadership is said to involve “the driving forces, visions, and processes that fuel large-scale transformation.” In change leadership, the process of change is quicker, cleverer, and more efficient. Empowerment of the masses of people is also a vital element of this engine.

The nature of change leadership is that things could get a little out of control; therefore, the engine needs someone who is highly skilled to drive it in order to minimize risks. Change leadership is seen as a big challenge for the future and is overshadowed by the fact that almost no one is conversant with it.

Women are said to be born leaders. eCornell can help to maximize the leadership qualities in you when you register for their MBA-level certificate in Change Leadership with the special code provided to FEW Members in their FEW to You Membership email to access a 30% discount.

The Village Mind: The Breakthrough Diet, a 12-Week 1-1 Coaching Program

Are you struggling to find work-life balance? Do you need to make health and wellness a priority in your daily life? Would you like to transform the burnout of building a business into your best, most badass boss-style life?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, the Breakthrough Diet 12-week 1-1 coaching program is perfect for you, and I can help coach you through every step of the way!

I’m Alexandra – a holistic health practitioner and expert in mindful wellness. Connect with me at alexandra@thevillagemind.com when you’re ready for your breakthrough!

Sarah Furuya: Let’s talk relationships!

We all live and work in relationship with others and in relationship systems. Understanding the dynamics of how you work within your relationships and relationship systems is fundamental to a great experience and in improving relationships.

“Everybody is right, only partially”. This is sometimes a bitter pill to swallow.

Think about the politician you dislike the most. The friend who you just don’t agree with. The family member who is JUST WRONG. Contemplate on the idea that they are right, partially. And so are you. It’s a tricky one isn’t it?

Sarah invites you to go into inquiry about where these people are right. A bit. Where’s the 2% truth in what they have to say? Do it on your most disliked figure. This is coaching in action. Questioning our beliefs. Questioning our perceptions. Questioning our absolutes. It’s confronting. But going into inquiry can be incredibly rewarding. Coaching is work. Thinking differently is fun but always brings up our ahem, ’stuff’.

In the spring, Sarah will be opening up a limited number of group or pair coaching spaces. If you are interested – get in touch at info@sarahfuruya.com to hear more about Spring workshops and tasters.

Interested in trying coaching? Free 30-minute sessions are open – have a taster!
