April Offers from our Sponsors

eCornell – 30% discount on MBA-level Change Leadership Certificate

Kotter, a contributor to Forbes, in writing about Change Management vs. Change Leadership states that some people use the terms interchangeably and stresses the significant differences between them.

  • Change management is articulated to be a set of tools used to keep change efforts under control.
  • Change leadership is said to involve “the driving forces, visions, and processes that fuel large-scale transformation.” In change leadership, the process of change is quicker, cleverer, and more efficient. Empowerment of the masses of people is also a vital element of this engine.

The nature of change leadership is that things could get a little out of control; therefore, the engine needs someone who is highly skilled to drive it in order to minimize risks. Change leadership is seen as a big challenge for the future and is overshadowed by the fact that almost no one is conversant with it.

Women are said to be born leaders. eCornell can help to maximize the leadership qualities in you when you register for their MBA-level certificate in Change Leadership with the special code provided to FEW Members in their FEW to You Membership email to access a 30% discount.

On March 6th, 2019, a small group of women eager to learn more about their strengths gathered to Lumina Learning Japan’s office in Ichigaya. Each had been asked to create their Lumina Spark profile with a special app before the workshop, as those results would be analyzed in detail during the session.

Lumina Learning, also a FEW Sponsor, provides psychometrics-based development solutions to support organizational transformation for companies worldwide, and FEW Members had a chance to take a 2-hour trial of the normally full day personal assessment.

At the event, Lumina Learning coach Ulrika Yui and her assistant Momoko Ozawa welcomed everyone briefly and then proceeded to lead an evening that was a full journey into the inner self – through Q&A cards and questionnaires the participants defined themselves based on the four color archetypes and colored the results on paper.

You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.

Plato

Then, each of the participants was given a 36-page long Lumina Spark Portrait to compare if the results matched with the pre-assessment everyone had taken before the workshop. Everyone was astonished to see how well the two matched. Indeed, when Yui lead the group through the “Twenty Four Qualities” in detail, it was an eye-opening experience to many, providing concrete tips on like how to create a high-performing team and how to become a better leader.

Lumina’s humanistic viewpoint is that everyone has strengths they might be unaware of and, if brought to consciousness, they become able to utilize those in their work and life. Through the Lumina Spark Portrait, participants were able to achieve a deeper understanding of their underlying natural self, as well as conscious self, to recognize their strengths – and hopefully be able to put those to good use in the future!

FEW wants to thank Lumina Learning and Ulrika Yui & Momoko Ozawa for providing us with this wonderful opportunity to discover our personas and help us become better leaders and coworkers!

On a sunny Sunday afternoon in February, H&R Roppongi’s room was filled with skilled DIY artists and entrepreneurs, eager to learn how to take more Instagram-worthy photos of their products in a special workshop by TopTia Photography.

Many people sell their handicrafts and other creative products and services through the internet to consumers who are looking for more authentic and personal products than the common brands sold in shops. Be it a side hustle or a full-grown business you are running, good product photography is the key to catch consumers’ eyes in the saturated market.

However, a lot of sellers only think of the informative part of a photo and settle for simply having a quick snap for social media or their website. These serve their function, but if a seller wants to kill it with their products, they should think of the other elements such as lighting, background, angles, and consistency, Tia Haygood from TopTia photography stressed.

From the Basics to Some Pro Tricks

Tia Haygood introducing the special workshop

After a short talk on the basics of photographing, such as photo pixel count and resolution, and techniques that make products shine, it was time to check the cameras and products the participants had brought with them. Contrary to many beliefs, you don’t need to have a professional camera to take great photos, a smartphone is enough in many cases.

During the workshop’s hands-on practice session, the participants experimented with composition, angles, and lighting in real life to see how especially lightning makes a big difference. They learned how to handle lights and shadows by using a handcrafted balance board made by Tia with aluminum foil, cardboard, and white A1 size paper.

Check the lighting, background, angles, and consistency of the product to take great photos.

Tia Haygood, TopTia Photography

Even with lighting tricks, not all photos look as great as they could, and thus Tia also shared her tips on recommended apps which can be used to enhance photos afterward. At the end of the workshop, Amazon’s product photography guidelines were also discussed, giving the aspiring handicraft entrepreneurs all the tools needed taking better product photographs!

FEW wants to thank our Sponsor TopTia Photography for this wonderful workshop. Besides regular photo shoot sessions, TopTia Photography arranges women-only photo retreats regularly, so if you are interested in learning more, please visit TopTia.com.

The Village Mind: The Breakthrough Diet, a 12-Week 1-1 Coaching Program

Are you struggling to find work-life balance? Do you need to make health and wellness a priority in your daily life? Would you like to transform the burnout of building a business into your best, most badass boss-style life?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, the Breakthrough Diet 12-week 1-1 coaching program is perfect for you, and I can help coach you through every step of the way!

I’m Alexandra – a holistic health practitioner and expert in mindful wellness. Connect with me at alexandra@thevillagemind.com when you’re ready for your breakthrough!

Sarah Furuya: Let’s talk relationships!

We all live and work in relationship with others and in relationship systems. Understanding the dynamics of how you work within your relationships and relationship systems is fundamental to a great experience and in improving relationships.

“Everybody is right, only partially”. This is sometimes a bitter pill to swallow.

Think about the politician you dislike the most. The friend who you just don’t agree with. The family member who is JUST WRONG. Contemplate on the idea that they are right, partially. And so are you. It’s a tricky one isn’t it?

Sarah invites you to go into inquiry about where these people are right. A bit. Where’s the 2% truth in what they have to say? Do it on your most disliked figure. This is coaching in action. Questioning our beliefs. Questioning our perceptions. Questioning our absolutes. It’s confronting. But going into inquiry can be incredibly rewarding. Coaching is work. Thinking differently is fun but always brings up our ahem, ’stuff’.

In the spring, Sarah will be opening up a limited number of group or pair coaching spaces. If you are interested – get in touch at info@sarahfuruya.com to hear more about Spring workshops and tasters.

Interested in trying coaching? Free 30-minute sessions are open – have a taster!

Home.

A word that holds much meaning for so many people.

Blu Jam Cafe has called Tokyo home for two years. Chef Kamil Majer, founder of the original Los Angeles branch crafted a menu and philosophy truly fit for anyone. It adorns options not so easily found in the city – vegan, gluten-free, vegetarian, to mention a few.

Blu Jam Cafe Japan aims to bring a small slice of home to Tokyo. The Blu Jam staff culture is always warm and they are often connecting with guests as if they’ve known them forever. Casual, friendly, and inviting; Blu Jam Cafe Japan brings a touch of West Coast to Daikanyama.

As we jump into the new year, we wanted to hear from Blu Jam Cafe on their success – establishing not only a fabulous customer base in Japan but also creating a wonderful atmosphere for their employees – and in such a short time!

What would be your number one recommendation for people who want to start their own business?

In starting a business, we feel it is paramount to understand and immerse ourselves in the community at large.

What are the 3 essentials for running a business in your opinion?

I would say the three essentials are…

  • Networking
  • Building partnerships
  • Being open for new opportunities

Keeping the lights on means getting to know people. Networking and business go hand-in-hand, and in two years we’ve formed partnerships with several organizations as a venue for events and gatherings. Tokyo is home to 9.2 million people and everyone you meet can potentially open paths to different opportunities.

What are your top resources when it comes to running your business on an everyday basis?

Perhaps the most indispensable resource we have at Blu Jam Cafe is our staff. People that love what they do show it in their work, through their work. From our chefs, servers to our managers, we do our best to share our piece of home with everyone who walks through our doors.
