AI tools are everywhere: writing our emails, suggesting our content, even coaching us on how to communicate. For professional women, this raises real questions:

  • How do I use AI without losing what makes my voice mine?
  • When does AI help me communicate better, and when does it flatten my message?
  • How do I stay authentic in a world that's increasingly automated?

This fireside chat is for you whether you’re pro-AI, anti-AI, or AI-curious. Because all of us need to navigate this moment thoughtfully — especially as women who've worked hard to find and own our voices in professional spaces.

Helen Iwata, a bilingual leadership & communication coach with 35 years in Japan, TEDx speaker, and founder of Sasuga Communications K. K., brings both practical expertise and personal perspective to this conversation.

What to Expect

Event Recap

On February 12th, we gathered online for an inspiring Member's Meeting with Tracey Northcott, a businesswoman whose journey in Japan truly embodies the Japanese proverb nanakorobi yaoki 七転び八起き, fall seven times, stand up eight.

Tracey shared with 21 of our members some of the real challenges and breakthroughs she had while building multiple businesses in Tokyo.  From tech entrepreneurship, balancing hospitality, and family life while navigating communication crises, shifting regulations, and economic disruptions, her story reminded us that resilience isn't about never falling. It’s about taking one small step forward when you do. For her, resilience means adaptation, boundaries clarity and self trust. Her story, and what resilience means to our members sparked interesting discussions in the breakout rooms.

We are so grateful to Tracey for sharing her vulnerability and truth with us. And we are grateful to our community for holding space and sharing their own stories.

The truth is, we all fall, but with self-belief, good friends and a supportive community we can stand up and move forwards again.

Event Recap

An Evening of Reflection & Connection

On October 30th, we gathered virtually for our first Member's Meeting of the 2025-2026 "Resilience & Renewal" year. Certified sophorologist Gaëlle Chatenet, fellow FEW Japan member, led a transformative exploration to identify a restricting inner story and then guided each member in how to rewrite it. To release whatever is holding us back and envision ourselves beyond that story.

“I realized it wasn’t just me… I wasn’t alone”

Gaëlle’s shared her own inspiring story with FEW members. She discovered sophrology during a physically traumatic accident that happened to her on the way to her baby shower. A day that was meant to be filled with love and smiles started one of the most challenging periods of her life. During that time Gaëlle found sophrology to be a powerful tool for healing and growth. She now shares her story and expertise to help others.

For Gaëlle, she was struck by the honesty and trust within the group “It was such a joy to meet the members of FEW and share a space for reflection and growth together. The workshop felt like a warm circle of trust,  a safe place to explore our stories and the meanings we’ve given them.”

At the end of the session, members reflected on the feelings that emerged since rewriting their stories. A communal sense of calmness and mutuality - not feeling alone.

It reminded us of the quiet power of storytelling. When we speak our truths and listen deeply, transformation begins.

Join us for Part Two

Couldn’t join us for this event? Don't worry, the FEW team are busy organizing part two, a follow-up session, in the new year!

A heartfelt thank you to Gaëlle for her wisdom, vulnerability, and expert guidance. And to all our members who showed up with open hearts because your courage to explore, share, and grow together is what makes this community truly special.

One final message from Gaëlle:

"The story you tell yourself shapes the life you live. Change the story, and you transform your world."

International Women's Day 2025

For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.

What you Missed…

For this International Women’s Rights’ Month, FEW Japan partnered up with Women in Tech Global - Japan Chapter to go “Full STEAM Ahead” and discuss how to accelerate action for women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics sectors. We couldn’t be prouder of how it turned out!

Thanks to Impact Hub Tokyo, our guests gathered and discussed for about an hour with delicious food and drinks before we dived into the conversation. We first had a wonderful keynote address from Tomoko Mitsuoka, who represents Japan at the Global AI Ethics Institute in Paris. She showed us how different the Japanese perception of AI was from the Western one, and how much our use of AI and technology in a broader context is rooted in cultural factors. Take the representation of AI in Western movies: the robots take over the world, and we all die. In the Japanese context? Anime, manga… AI is progress! But ethics when it comes to AI is not understood the same in all cultures. Hence the dire -and urgent!- need for us all to educate ourselves and use critical thinking, as well as our ethics, when we reflect on AI… or ask ChatGPT to write our next email!

IMG_6066

We then welcomed our wonderful panelists and explored together how we can accelerate action for women in STEAM sectors. How can we attract them to and educate them in STEAM sectors? How can we make sure to succeed as women in STEAM? How can we empower other women? Of course, we had to give you their key takeaways.

  1. Navigating Identity in Japan – Cecilia shared her experience as a woman of color in Japan, highlighting the challenge of navigating both foreign and local professional communities. Her advice: assert yourself and turn disadvantages into strengths.
  2. Breaking Bias in Entrepreneurship – Apolline recounted her journey as a half-Japanese, half-French entrepreneur in Japan. She emphasized the importance of overcoming internalized bias and challenging societal norms around caregiving and professional identity.
  3. Gender Stereotypes in Tech – Kumiko discussed the stark gender imbalance in Japan’s tech industry, comparing it with her experiences abroad. She stressed the need for systemic change, inclusive policies, and challenging the "Rikejo" stereotype of women in STEM.
  4. Career Growth & Sponsorship – Kristina, with 30 years of experience in Japan, highlighted the importance of sponsorship over mentorship. She urged women to seek advocates in leadership roles to support their advancement.
  5. Attracting Women to STEAM – Kumiko and Cecilia emphasized the power of representation, mentorship, and confidence-building to counteract cultural expectations that dissuade young girls from pursuing STEAM careers.
  6. Self-Advocacy & Visibility – Apolline reminded us that women often do invisible work. She encouraged active self-promotion, challenging perfectionism, and making bold career moves. Special tip! Use the 20-80% rule: put 20% of your energy in creating your contents, and 80% in promoting it!
  7. Building Inclusive Workplaces – The panelists underscored the need for workplaces to accommodate diverse needs, including parental responsibilities, and emphasized the importance of flexible policies to retain women in STEAM.
  8. The Role of Mentorship – Creating strong peer and mentor networks was a recurring theme. Cecilia and Kumiko shared how initiatives like Lean In Circles and Diversity Cafés can foster inclusive spaces. You should do the same in your workspace, and wherever you can!

The Future of Women in STEAM – While challenges persist, the panelists were optimistic about Japan’s policy shifts and the changing perspectives of younger generations. They even told us how we can use some of Japan’s patriarchal cultural aspects to our own advantage! More on that later…

P1450316

About our panelists:

  1. Apolline Daimaru, with a decade of experience ranging from managing global brands to building her own venture, is cofounder of nowthen, a brand and product design studio that helps startups unlock growth through design.
  2. Cecilia Grandi-Nagashiro, an academic coordinator and communications specialist, wears many hats for The University of Tokyo, ranging from public relations innovation to DEI progress, without forgetting sustainability.
  3. Kumiko Morita, who began her career at NTT Docomo, where she co-founded the first circle for women’s empowerment, LEAN IN, joined Waffle, an association who trains girls and young women in tech sectors,  as a full-time member, responsible for corporate partnerships and policy advocacy.
  4. Kristina Janjetic, is active as a training instructor for growth thinking and amplified leadership, as well as a mentor for the WITJ (Women in Technology Japan) community, having had a rich career in tech in Japan.

And because we know you want more of that knowledge, here are some hot tips…

Exclusive Community Tips: Mastering Leadership & Overcoming Mental Barriers

  • Apolline’s “Menstrual Mapping” for Productivity: She advises tracking one’s menstrual cycle to understand peak energy periods and schedule important meetings or creative work accordingly. For instance, during the follicular phase (after menstruation), cognitive abilities are sharper, making it ideal for strategic planning.
  • Kristina’s “Overcoming the Fixed Mindset”: She recommends adopting a Growth Mindset by reframing failure as a learning opportunity and asking for feedback as often as possible—even negative feedback—to build resilience and normalize constructive criticism.
  • Cecilia’s “Leveraging Cultural Norms for Change”: She suggests using Japan’s strong hierarchical structures to an advantage. Many senior male leaders see themselves as protectors of women—rather than rejecting this outdated notion outright, women can redirect it towards meaningful advocacy, such as encouraging them to sponsor and mentor women in leadership.
  • Kumiko’s “Policy as a Long-Term Lever for Inclusion”: Cultural evolution is a gradual process, but Japan’s bureaucratic structure ensures that once a policy is established, it has permanent power. Women in STEAM should actively push for workplace policies on equal hiring, flexible work arrangements, and leadership training—these policies may take time, but they can create lasting, institutionalized change.

Shinnenkai 2025 Event Recap

What you Missed… FEW Japan held the annual Shinnenkai Event

FEW Japan held our annual Shinnenkai on Friday, January 31st, at the Code Chrysalis office in Roppongi. This gathering served as an important platform for FEW’s Corporate and Non-Profit Organizational Members, who served as panelists on an educational and impactful panel discussion. After networking over a delicious dinner catered by Kiwi Kitchen, participants listened as our esteemed panelists shared their strategies and insights regarding the implementation of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, underlining the significance of incorporating diverse perspectives in the workplace and the benefits of doing so. The evening finished with an opportunity for more networking and a fun photo opportunity - check out the photos below!

Key Takeaways

  • In the context of today's complex political landscape, Japan stands poised to harness both challenges and opportunities. The nation can emerge as a leader, providing guidance and strength to others in the integration of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the workplace. This proactive approach not only fosters a more inclusive environment but also sets a standard for global best practices in organizational culture.
  • The implementation of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives within organizations has resulted in significant, measurable outcomes, as shared by our panelists. These outcomes include a notable increase in hiring rates, enhanced employee retention, and the cultivation of a more inclusive and safe work environment.
  • The inclusion of diverse perspectives and experiences within organizations plays a crucial role in fostering innovation and enhancing customer service quality. By embracing a variety of viewpoints, businesses can leverage creativity and address customer needs more effectively, ultimately leading to improved outcomes and satisfaction.
  • Diversity of perspectives and experience within organizations also contributes to increased innovation and overall better customer service.
  • In the long term, everyone gains from inclusive organizational structures that benefit employees.

sWhat you Missed…

FEW Japan members gathered around the (virtual) fireside for an open, heartfelt conversation with two extraordinary women, Angela Ortiz Pettas and Ginger Griggs on December 12, 2024 for our Members’ Meeting titled “Coloring Outside the Lines at all Ages & Stages”

The intimate conversation held online brought together our members to rethink the possibilities of an abundant and interesting life full of opportunities at every age and stage.

Event Highlights

The evening began with a warm welcome from Laura Staub and Maud Niemi, Directors of Member Engagement, who introduced our guest speakers for a warm and open conversation.

Key components of the event included:

  1. Holiday season: Co-President Stephanie Napier acknowledged the holiday season's mix of joy and challenges, especially for expats far from home, the pressure in creating holiday magic for others. The evening’s program aims to provide support and connection through inspiring stories from two extraordinary women.
  2. Inspiring journeys: Our guest speakers  Angela Ortiz Pettas and Ginger Griggs shared their experiences at different life stages. They talked about learning your way to new careers, making bold moves, going through traumatic experiences and how to overcome them
  3. Questions from our members:
Our members had time to ask questions to Angela & Ginger and reflect on their own journey in a safe space for womxn.

Key Takeaways

  • Finding your way by learning new skills:
    1. Using and applying your existing knowledge to help you pivot and thrive in new environments (people skills, project management, capitalizing upon knowledge from NPO to morph to another industry, such as CSR…)
    2. Learning a new language, a new career, a new culture, a new fitness regimen.
    3. Being inquisitive, asking questions to understand what people need and how to support them, rather than assuming we already know.
    4. Inviting others in to support us in finding answers and allowing them to guide us in finding out what we need to know to move forward to help them best.
    5. Learning how to outsource to people who are better at certain fields of expertise.
    6. Learning persistence of a gentle nudge, rather than overpowering somebody. Helping them find a way to trust you and come back to you to open up.
  1. Making bold moves and being courageous:
    1. Starting a disaster relief nonprofit without prior experience in that field of work.
    2. Returning to school later in life to get an MBA after 20 years of being a teacher.
    3. Moving to a new country with no language skills, barely any money and no market knowledge.
    4. Willing to keep believing in and then reinventing yourself. ‘You can’t do that’ is just a label people put on you. Be the best that you can be without putting yourself in a box.
    5. Sticking with the belief in your own vision, rather than letting any situation or negative person around you scare you from your path.
  2. Going through traumatic events and how to overcome them: Our trusted relationships and community of support will help us get through loss & grief, divorce, unemployment, overdue bills, the Tohoku Great East Japan Earthquake, and more. Build your relationships and invest in communities of people who see you, cherish you, and celebrate you!

Questions from our members

Career evolution:

  • Aspire to be good enough, not perfect.
  • Practice the language in a less pressured environment such as with friends or through volunteering in spaces where they are just glad you want to help.
  • Forget about being perfect and try to be good enough.

How to build confidence?

  • Find a particular area that you're good at and make that part of the story of who you are and why you enjoy that thing you are great at.
  • Build resilience to have the skills to deal with negativity and negative people
  • Study coaching can help because it is a practice that you have to do over and over again to remain objective.
  • Remain curious and keep asking questions of yourself to test the stories you tell yourself (is it true?) and also that you can ask others to draw out and get to see the best of other people.

FEW Japan October 2024 Members’ Meeting Event Recap: Build the Community You Deserve

FEW Japan kicked off its 2024-2025 programming season on October 17, 2024, with an inspiring and interactive monthly Members’ Meeting titled "Build the Community You Deserve." Held online, the event brought together a diverse group of womxn from across Japan, fostering connections and sparking meaningful discussions about the future of our community.

Event Highlights

The evening began with a warm welcome from Mahi Patki, Vice President of Member Engagement, who introduced FEW Japan's theme for the upcoming year: "Cultivating our Future." This theme embodies our commitment to nurturing growth and development within our Community, emphasizing the importance of planting seeds today for a flourishing tomorrow.

Key components of the event included:

FEW---MM-Oct-2024---2

Key Takeaways

Making Japan More Inclusive for Women

In our first breakout session, women shared their perspectives on what would make Japan more aware, inclusive, and equitable for their lived reality.  We discussed:

  • The power of individual actions: How being open and proactive in our daily interactions can make a significant difference.
  • The importance of safe spaces: these enable us to create opportunities for open communication, shared experiences, and being heard.
  • Mentorship and womxn’s groups in the workplace: Connecting with other womxn for support, guidance, and shared learning. More employers are open to womxn’s groups at work, and our members are helping pave a path for these spaces.
  • Everyday advocacy: From medical care to workplace policies, womxn are changemakers through informed advocacy for and of ourselves, our peers, and our communities.

Cultivating the FEW Japan Community

Our second breakout session focused on what we as a community might want to do or co-create over the next year, and beyond. These discussions were fruitful and painted a picture of FEW Japan’s future with truly exciting ideas. Some included:

  • Supporting newcomers to Japan with resources and networks for navigating life here.
  • Expanding mentorship programs by connecting women across different life stages, professional progression, and industries for growth and support.
  • Skilling up with workshops on career progression, job hunting, and personal finances in Japan
  • Community service and volunteering together
  • Supporting mental health of our members with “third places” that allow for self-care & wellness through shared hobbies or experiences

Looking Ahead

As FEW Japan enters its 44th year, we feel incredibly energized by the enthusiasm and ideas shared during this event. The discussions highlighted the community's desire for even more opportunities to connect with one another, not only through networking opportunities but also skill-sharing sessions and spaces for personal well-being.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants for their valuable contributions. It’s the insights of our Members and Community that will help to shape our upcoming programs as we work together to cultivate the future of FEW and by extension of our mission, more equitable futures for diverse women in Japan!

Stay tuned for more exciting events, including our next FEWture Conference. We look forward to your continued engagement and support as WE build the Community WE  deserve with your help.

About the Climate Fresk Workshop

What you Missed… FEW x FAJ Partner up for Education on Climate Solidarity
FEW Japan kicked off our first Regional Gathering event of the 2024 fall season on September 29th with a successful Climate Fresk workshop. Held at the Impact Hub Tokyo and co-hosted with our sister organization FAJ (Facilitating Women’s Ambition) with contribution of expert facilitation by support from Ichigo Bloom, we welcomed over 20 women for a fun-filled afternoon of debates, revisiting knowledge from high school science classes, and great teamwork.

Key Takeaway

  • Small actions matter, because small actions add up.
  • Individuals can make a difference. But you don't have to do it all alone!
  • Together, through education and collaboration, change can happen.
  • We cannot fix what we do not understand. The science of climate change is clear, by understanding the basics of the causes and consequences of climate change we can take informed and effective action.
  • Through working together to understand what we are facing, we are able to somewhat predict the future and therefore plan for it better.

Key Actions

  • Individual level: Reduce consumption of meat (especially beef), and introduce more plant-based food to your diet. Take fewer flights to travel abroad for holiday, and instead explore the abundant beautiful places in Japan by public transport.
  • Household level: Switch your electricity supplier to one that sources from renewable energy!
  • Company or organizational level: Measure greenhouse gas emissions and the other environmental impacts of your company, and then create and implement an action plan.
  • Societal level: Spread the word, and encourage your friends, family, co-workers, and local politicians.
  • Educational level: Get in touch with Ichigo Bloom to book a workshop!

Climate Fresk is a globally run educational workshop that supports participants to better understand the complexities of climate science. Using a creative, gamified approach in conjunction with science-based findings, participants of different ages, knowledge and experience levels discuss a range of concepts to gain clarity and insight on the intricacies of climate change’s causal relationships. This information is then used to discuss changes groups, individuals and corporations can make on a macro and micro scale. These discussions helped participants truly understand the impact one person can have, the difference they can make and the value of their contribution.

Led by Mahi Patki, Vice President of Member Engagement for FEW Japan, the event kicked off with a warm welcome and an invitation to participants to create a physical world map based on where they were born. We were all scattered across the room exemplifying the diversity of the group activity. Guided by co-facilitators Diana Benikhlef (Member Experience Leader FAJ), and Sakura Hamaoka and Bageshree Katneshwarkar (both representing Ichigo Bloom), we split into groups to solve a card-based puzzle that explained key scientific concepts about the causes and effects of climate change. Through the use of arrows and notes under the concepts, participants could visually represent and therefore see just how interconnected all the elements being discussed are. It supported the consolidation of knowledge and enabled more in-depth reflections to be shared.

Participants engaged in discussions about their experiences and the impacts of climate change in their communities, offering solutions at individual, collective, and governmental levels, while also thinking strategically about how FEW and FAJ as impactful women’s empowerment organizations can incorporate sustainability into our practices. After a thought-provoking three-hour session, the event concluded with friendly exchanges, networking and refreshments. The conversations and discussions supported the learning of the participants in an open and collaborative environment with the overall aim of adding to the collective knowledge.

Many participants commented on how well-structured the workshop was, calling it a great opportunity to refresh both old and new knowledge on environmental issues and actions they could take afterward. We thank FAJ for collaborating with us to make this event possible, Ichigo Bloom for running this well-prepared and engaging workshop, and Impact Hub Tokyo for providing an awesome venue with delicious food and drinks. We look forward to your participation in future events later this year!
